Mitsubishi Repair: timing belt, dual overhead cam, interference engine

Question
I have a 2000 galant 4 cyclinder and the timing belt broke. Is my engine a non-interferece engine and if so how much I'm I really looking at to pay to get it fixed.

Answer
Kali,
You have a single overhead cam engine (SOHC) which still may be an interference engine, but it typically doesn't cause as much damage if your timing belt breaks as it does with dual overhead cam engines.  Your overall cost will depend mostly on the mechanic that does the work.  Labor cost is typically more expensive than the parts you may need.  You may find it cheaper to buy a rebuilt head and get that installed, which can be cheaper than having your current head rebuilt.  But you'll need to have a mechanic assess the overall damage to your head.  If I were to ballpark a price, I would guess between $800-$1200.
Good luck!
