Mitsubishi Repair: Screeching Noise at Acceleration/AC, mitsubishi galant, air conditioner compressor

Question
I have  1996 Mitsubishi Galant S.  In the mornings when I start the car, white smoke comes out of the tail pipe for about 5min then stops.   I also get a loud screeching noise for alittle bit then stops.  When I put the car in drive, the noise increases with the acceleration.  This screeching also occurs when I activate the heat or Defrost.  This screeching stops when I turn off the Heat/Defrost, OR if my speed is 50mph.  Can you give me some insight?   Let me let you know that when this would happend, it popped my Alternator belt...which the car eventually shut down (lol).  I took it to Exxon Mechanics to put a new belt on it (thinkin it would stop the noise), but Nope!, the screeching is still there.

Answer
Kevin,
As far as the white smoke is concerned, that is perfectly normal.  Especially if the mornings in your area are getting colder.  When you park your car at night, the warm exhaust pipes cause the cool air around them to condense, and water will form in your exhaust pipes.  Then, in the morning when you start your car, hot exhaust gas now passes over that water and turns it into steam.  That steam is the white smoke you're seeing.

On many cars, when the defrost is turned on, the air conditioner compressor is also activated.  The dry air that that comes out of your vents with the AC running helps with the defrosting/defogging.  If your AC belt is worn, or slipping on the compressor pulley, you will hear a squealing noise.  Since you already got your alternator belt replaced, you should also get your power steering belt and AC belt replaced as well.  It's usually a good rule of thumb to replace all belts at the same time.
Good luck!
