Mitsubishi Repair: engine surging when cold, throttle position sensor, eagle talon tsi awd

Question
I have a 1991 eagle talon tsi awd and when i start my car it surges for about 10 mins until the car is warm. How can i fix this?

Answer
Zac,
If by surging you mean that your idle is high when the engine is cold; like around 1500-2000 RPMs, that is normal on a cold morning.  But if your RPMs bounce between 800-2000+ RPMs, then there is a good chance your idle air control (IAC) motor is malfunctioning.  Your IAC regulates your idle speed and should keep it around 800 RPMs.  Typically, if the IAC is bad, it will continue to surge even after the engine is warm.

You should also check your throttle position sensor (TPS).  If the TPS is malfunctioning, your idle will behave erratically at any engine temperature.  All these items can be checked on your own if you have a voltmeter and a repair manual.  Both Haynes and Chiltons make a repair manual, and you can find them at most auto parts stores.
Good luck!
