Mitsubishi Repair: 95 Eclipse GSX, eclipse gsx, stereo amplifier

Question
Hi, I have a 95 Eclipse GSX 5spd with 84k miles on it. Within the last 5k miles I had the IAC Motor replaced because of a surging idle, along with the EGR Valve and had the throttle body serviced. I have had MANY more repairs done since then but my IAC Motor seems damaged again! Only 5k miles after being replaced! So my question is, is there anything specific that causes the IAC Motor to fail? How long should an IAC Motor last? And, should the dealer that did the work replace it if the warranty is 12mo/12k miles, if the car as only 5k miles but it has been 12 months? Thank you so much for your time!

Answer
Chris,
The main cause of IAC failure is time and normal wear and tear.  For a new IAC to go bad after only 5,000 miles, that's pretty rare.  The IAC that was installed was probably a remanufactured IAC.  Not uncommon.  Sometimes IACs can go bad prematurely if you do a lot of idling, and there is a lot extra strain on your engine; like from your A/C, headlights, high output stereo amplifier, etc.

Most dealerships are pretty strict when it comes to the 12mo/12k miles, but definitely talk with the service manager at the dealership about the issue.  He may allow it to be replaced free of charge.  Though some dealerships are weary of honoring replacement parts on car's that have been modified; like many owners of the GSX model tend to do.
Good luck!
