Military Vehicle Repair: cucv question, dirty conditions, engine rev

Question
Thanks for answering my previous question. How many miles do you have on your trucks. Can I expect to get a lot out of one with regular maintenance? Mine only has 26000 on it and runs great. Am I harming the engine by bypassing the oil cooler? I Looped the lines near the oil filter when the cooler line began to leak near the radiator. I also had a guy tell me if I put big tires on it I can drive it a lot faster. Is this true since I dont ever go over 50 mph in it.

Answer
Hello Nate,
How many miles I have is not a good comparison. The miles my trucks get on them are harder than even the Army does most of the time. All my miles are in four wheel drive, off road, dusty, dirty conditions, sometimes jumping off the ground.
Those trucks are very rugged.
If properly taken care of there is no reason you can't get 200,000 miles out of it, or more.

The oil cooler would help it last longer, but if you are not driving with real heavy loads, and working it real hard, or at high speeds/RPM's, it won't hurt it. Just change the oil more often.

The larger diameter tires...that is a point about any vehicle. With the engine running at the same speed, the vehicle will actually be moving faster with larger(taller) tires, but the power will be reduced.
Keep in mind, the speedometer will be wrong, and so will the odometer. And it will be by a percentage. Like two sizes larger might make a 10 % difference. If the speedometer shows 50, you will actually be traveling 55, or if it shows 30, you will actually be going 33, etc. But you need to find out with something accurate, like a GPS device, or a measured distance, or radar. Don't wait till you get a ticket.
But if you don't go over 50 because the engine wraps up so tight, that will let you go faster at the same RPM. or, if you just don't want to drive over 50, the bigger tires will let the engine rev slower.
Keep in mind, that is circumference, which means height of the tires. Width doesn't change the speed at all.
