Mitsubishi Repair: laser repair, worn bearings, propeller shaft

Question
I recently replaced the timing belt on my 91 Plymouth laser 2.0 turbo 5 speed. before i brought the car in for repairs it would idle horrible....sometimes it would sit at around 1000 rpm's and be fine but others it would drop down to 500 and die, only at idle. After I got the timing belt replaced and got it back on the road the car will jump and the boost will swing back and forth. any suggestions on how to get rid of either of the problems?

Answer
Eric,
Many times, your idle can show difference once the timing belt is changed.  It may just need to be re-adjusted.  Just about any local garage can do this.  Or if you have a repair manual for your car, you could do it yourself.

You also may have a problem with your Idle Air Control (IAC) motor.  That's a small motor that regulates the amount of air that enters your engine when you're idling; hence it is supposed to control where your RPMs are at.  If that motor is malfunctioning, your RPMs could be as high has 1800 or drop so low that your engine stalls.  Have that checked as well.

If your boost for your turbo oscillates when accelerating, you may have a leak in your exhaust manifold.  Or, you could have a leak in your intake somewhere.  Also, if the propeller shaft in the turbo is wobbliy from worn bearings, that can cause this problem as well.  Most any mechanic can check this without the need to remove anything.
Good luck!
