Mitsubishi Repair: Automatic Transmission, synthetic gear oil, dexron iii

Question
Hi Anthony
I have a 96 Mitsubishi Galant, with about 72,000 miles.  Its been great over the years.  Now I'm experiencing occasionally some slight slippage, on the upshift, when accelerating from one gear to the next.
This is the first time I will be dropping the pan and changing the filter, & gasket.
My question is, while the pan is down, is there anything else that I should be replacing or inspecting.
Thanks in advance

Answer
Guy,
When you get the pan off, the best thing to do is clean it VERY well.  CAREFULLY scrape away all the gasket material from around the rim on the pan.  Replace any rusty bolts that are used to hold the pan up.  Most hardware stores will have those bolts, but getting some from your local Mitsubishi dealership might be better.  They aren't very expensive.  When I have cleaned out tranny pans in the past, I usually clean the inside with brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner.  That will ensure you get all the oil and grit possible.  Look in your owners manual for the recommend gear oil that it takes.  If it just says any Dexron III ATF will do, then buy a good full-synthetic gear oil.  It will last longer, and flow smoother.  But if the manual recommends a Mitsubishi special formulated ATF fluid, stop by your dealership for a few quarts.

The ATF is a very critical component for your car, so do not try to short-change anything.  You'll feel more confident in spending a few extra dollars.
Good luck!
