Mitsubishi Repair: replace a/c compressor, auto salvage yards, r 134a

Question
I have a 1994 Diamante (excellent car)with only 65,000 miles. Recently it has stopped cooling and i am told will need a a/c compressor (and dryer). What should I expect the cost to be and where can I get the parts at lowest price. Please estimate the overall cost of repair.

Thank you very much.

Krip.

Answer
Krip,
If you want the lowest cost for parts, you can call around to auto salvage yards in your area.  Simply ask if they have the parts you require for your car.

But if you're looking for a brand new compressor and drier, the only place to go is to the dealership.  For a Diamante, the compressor can run you anywhere from $850 to $1000 depending on your engine type.  The drier can run you $80-$120.

There is a dealership in Pennsylvania that offer discounted prices on new OEM parts for Mitsubishis.  You can locate your car parts you need from this site:

The A/C parts can be located in the section labeled 'Hvac'.  The labor cost to install those items will vary as well.  In 1994, many cars still used the old R-12 refridgerant in their a/c systems.  The R-12 has been banned in the US, so if all your refridgerant has leaked out, you'll need to pay for a conversion to the new refridgerant; called R-134a.

But if you get a good deal on parts and an average fee for labor, you're probably looking to spend about $1200-$1500.
Good luck!
