Mitsubishi Repair: Starting problem, 1995 mitsubishi mirage, mitsubishi mirage

Question
We have a 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage with a 1.5 liter engine.  Yesterday my wife was driving the car and it was low on oil and gasoline.  She put oil in the engine and said it clattered a little at first when she put in the oil.  She was so concerned about the oil that she failed to put gasoline in it when she left the filling station.  She drove about 10 miles and the engine stopped completely.  She realized she was out of gasoline and cranked it and it restarted immediately but quit running because it was out of gasoline.  We got the automobile home last night and I put gasoline into the tank and tried to start it but it would not start.  The engine turns over easy and gasoline is getting to the fuel injectors.  I went to the automobile store and purchased ether and sprayed into the carb but it did not start.  I am curious if there is a fuse that burns out [older model of chevrolets had one] when the Mitsubishi engine becomes low on oil or runs out of gasoline?  Basically the engine has plenty of oil and gasoline and the problem seems to be that the engine now is not getting fire to the spark plugs.  Any assistance you can give me will be most appreciated.

Answer
Charles,
Mitsubishis do have a fusible link that blows if your engine runs out of fuel. I had a fuel pump die on me while driving on the highway, which is basically like running out of fuel.  My main ignition fuse blew, and that prevented me from even turning my engine over. You can certainly check all your fuses and fusible links; located near your battery.

Many times, when a car is allowed to run out of fuel, the fuel pump can get very hot.  This is because the only thing cooling down the pump is the gasoline that flows through it.  Also, there is always lots of grit and debris that builds up at the bottom of your gas tank.  Your pump will pull up a lot of that debris, and clog the pump and/or fuel filter.

It would be more common for you not to be getting fuel to your injectors, but not getting a spark from your spark plugs may be a different problem.  Check your plugs, plug wires and distributor cap.
Good luck!
