Mitsubishi Repair: Eclipse head gasket, head gasket replacement, welcome thanks

Question
Tony,
Hello again,                                         97 2liter Eclipse non-turbo. This car was diagnosed with an oil leak from the head gasket. (never heard of this before) The fix would involve pulling the head and changing the gasket. I was told that this is common with these engines. Have you had any experience with this problem? Any input is welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Larry

Answer
Larry,
It is possible oil could leak through a bad head gasket without associating with any coolent leak.  But check your overflow tank for oil in the coolant.  From my experience, it is NOT common for this to happen with this engine when used for everyday use.  Mitsubishi has used the same 2.0L engines in the first turbo Eclipses, to the latest Lancer EVO cars.

You may want to take the car to another mechanic for a second opinion.  A head gasket replacement is one of the most labor intensive jobs.  Also, if the head gasket does need to be replaced, be sure to have the mechanic inspect the rest of the block.  If your block is cracked, oil can leak and it could appear the gasket is at fault.
Good luck!
