Nissan Repair: 1997 Nissan XE pickup, fuel pressure regulator, vacuum hose

Question
Mr. Sudderth,
I have some of the problems you have already described with my pickup.  It starts fine, and then stalls when it warms.  It is very difficult to start after it stalls.  I have already changed the distributor, rotor and sparks plugs.  The spark plugs are usually blackened and smell of gas.  I don't have a garage to do much more trouble shooting.  Can you suggest another way to determine the problems with my vehicle?  Thank you for your time.

Stan

Answer
Stan,

Change the fuel filter and see if that helps.  It sounds like the truck is getting too much gas and that can be caused by an injector that is stuck open or a bad fuel pressure regulator.  After you change the filter check the fuel pressure and unplug the regulator vacuum hose and see if the pressure goes up.  If it stays the same the regulator is defective.  If not you might just have trash in the injectors holding them open giving the truck too much gas.
