Mitsubishi Repair: check engine, eclipse gs, autozone

Question
Hi,
I currently drive a 1998 Eclipse GS. The "Check Engine" light seems to have gone on the last few times i have driven my car. I do not drive it more than 1-3 times a week and if so, it's less than a mile. It runs fine, but I'm not sure why the light is going on. The dealer will charge me $91.00 just for the diagnostic. I keep up with it's regular oil changes, and have just missed the 15K tune-up. There is about 57K miles on it at this time. Any thoughts about the Check Engine would be appreciated! Let me know if you need more info!

Answer
Nerissa,
Checking your car's computer is the easiest way for dealerships to make money.  It should almost be illegal.  But there are alternatives; and they're free!

This web page will tell you how to find out yourself what is causing your check engine light to come on:

If you have a difficult time reading the codes yourself, check to see if you have an AutoZone in your area.  If you do, take your car to the AutoZone and they will read your diagnostic codes for free!  They should be able to tell you exactly what is wrong with your car, or at least give you the specific code which you could find the meaning from that web page I provided to you.
Good luck!
