Motorcycle Repair: Kawasaki Vulcan 750 gear shifter

The gear shifter on my 2006 broke loose.  Took off the cover and since the break is not visible there, I've been told it's likely the tie rod from the shifter to the turn drum and the case will have to be split to get access to where it needs to be repaired.  Since that's pretty labor intensive, can you give me an estimate of how many hours of labor a repair shop will likely charge to pull it apart that much to get it fixed?

Which cover did you take apart? Not the clutch...!
You only need to take apart the small cover on the left side, where the shift rod goes out of the engine.
You don't have to remove the engine and/or split the crankcase.
Please send me the bike's VIN number, so to be able to send you accurate instructions on troubleshooting and repair.

Also send me feedback on the following.

Is your shift pedal dead? i.e. goes up and down without shifting and without return to the rest
position?

Does it return but not shifting?

If you pull the shift rod, like you want to take it out of the engine, what happens?
Does it come off? (without cover removed!!!)
