QuestionQUESTION: I have a 305 Dream that I am trying to rebuild the engine. I have everything apart except the cam. I would like to remove the cam to sand/powder blast the outside without damaging the bearings. I understand it is a split cam but I do not know which way the nut is threaded on. Right or left hand from what view. I appreciate any input you can give me. I am also looking for a good repair manual for reassembly.

ANSWER: Don, after about 1962, the camshaft locking nuts were left-hand threads, so you have to loosen them in a clockwise direction. I usually jam a big fat box end wrench in the head between the head opening and the cam sprocket to keep it still. If you don't have an adjustable hook wrench, the Plan B is a large dulled chisel placed up against the nut flanks and a big hammer. If you are looking at the front of the head, the direction of the nut to loosen it is forward.

QUESTION: Thanks Bill. It came apart as you said. I have half of the cam out but am puzzled as to how to get the half with the cam chain sprocket out. I also did not put any timing marks on the two halves and noticed that they have to be put back a specific way. That will come later though I hope. Need to know how to get the other half out first.

AnswerDon, the other end of the camshaft is held into the sprocket with a tapered bolt. Remove the nut and washer, then turn the nut back onto the bolt just enough to get the nut flat with the end of the bolt.
Hit the end of the bolt/nut once sharply and it should loosen up.
