Motorcycle Repair: gen light

Question
I just got a 92 sportster its beensitting 11 years cleaned out the fuel system and rebuilt carb new battery starts and runs great but the gen light is on. where would you start looking?

Answer
Last year of the gen sportster was 1984. You have a altanator/ Regulator bike. Check voltage at  Battery first. Then start the bike again and rev the bike up to 2,500 rpms. If you are not showing more D.C. voltage at the battery. Then it is the stator or the Regulator. Unplug the regulator.  Start bike , use meter on A. C. Voltage. Should have 20 volts at 1000 rpms. 40 volts at 2000 rpm. If you don't have out put of a/c volts then the stator is bad. If volts are coming out of the stator. Then The Regulator needs to be replaced.
