Motorcycle Repair: carb 74 XL250, honda xl250, k1 usa

Question
I acquired this machine which has not run since 1982.  I got the engine to turn over, re-established spark and have removed gum and opened the jets, needle and seat, but I cannot get the throttle to move.  It appears clean and moves slightly.  Not sure on how to remove the cylinder.

Answer
Grampdad, You will have to both spray some carb cleaner down the slide on both sides of the carb body openings, then remove the carb top and dismantle the parts shown on #9 of

You might shoot some carb cleaner up the main jet holder passageway, as the needles can get glued into the needle jet bore causing them to stick, as well.

Years of varnish/corrosion has built up between the slide and the carb body slide opening bore, so you need to take it completely apart, soak it in carb cleaner, install carb kit components and then you should have a runner, once again. Make sure you are using screwdrivers with the correct tip size that are in new condition so you don't strip out the screw heads and make things worse.
