Motorcycle Repair: Parts identification, oem numbers, countershaft

Question
QUESTION: I have an 1986 H D sportster 883/1200 conversion. The trans countershaft broke off at first gear ruining mainshaft 1st gear & countershaft 3rd. All other parts appear to be in good condition. I have found the parts I need thru J&P but there are two different numbers for the same part, 3rd gear. One number ends in "a" and the other ends in "B". How do I know which part my bike needs so I order the correct ones?

ANSWER: The part number you are looking at, is it a harley part number?

QUESTION: yes, the numbers in the J&P cycle catolog for my parts are OEM numbers for Harley davidson, these are the numbers for the same part as they are in the catolog (OEM 35709-54a)&(OEM 35709-54b) both are a 23teeth 3rd gear for the countershaft. One costs twice as much as the other so there appears to be a difference, how do I tell which one is the one I need?

Answer
Both will work. The cost difference is probably which manufacture it is. When harley numbers their parts there is no letter after it. When there is a upgrade, an a is added. Another upgrade, a b is added. Another upgrade and a c is added, and so on. It could be just a suttle change, like materials, but it is still the same part.
Good luck and happy riding
