Motorcycle Repair: 1981 goldwing, timing belts, gl1100

Question
Just put in used GL1100 crankshaft will rotate about 360 degrees and come to complete stop. It will go back 360 degrees or so an d come to a sudden stop. I've done this about 1 dozen times manually the starter will do the same. I guess I'd like to know whats wrong. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Keith,

sounds like a valve timing or camshaft related problem.
Check the valve timing or see what the rockers and
valves are doing as the pistons rise.
It sounds like a piston might be hitting a valve.

The crankshafts all have the same stroke so it must
be something to do with the pistons and valves
unless something else is jamming the gears etc.

You could remove the timing belts and
move the pistons part way down the bores.
Turn the camshafts to see if they bind or not.
If not also turn the crankshaft to see if it will
make a full turn with the valves all set in the closed
position. Could be a cam binding or valve timing problem.
