Motorcycle Repair: Lights, signal relay, electronic signal

Question
I have all lights working but when I put on turn signal it lights up and stays lit. Would that be the turn signal relay? Also the light on the dash doesnt light when turn signal is put on. Could the relay have something to do with that or do you think the bulb is bad? Thanks again!

Answer
Hi Jeff.

If the signals are lighting up but not flashing it could be
the signal relay unless you have bulbs that are mismatched.

Another cause is low battery voltage.

If you are running standard bulbs then they must meet the
original specs the bike was made with.

If you are running "LED" bulbs in the front you need
an electronic signal relay or load equalizer.

My suggestion would be to attach a battery charger
to the battery and see if they flash.
If not then the signal relay may need changing.

The stock relay may not work well with aftermarket lights
which are usually "LED" bulbs.

If the lights flash too fast often resistors or load equalizers are installed.

I would try one of the electronic flashers rather than the stock one
if you have aftermarket signals.

The dash indicator light may just be the bulb or bulb socket corrosion.
