Motorcycle Repair: 88CI twin cam?, cam chains, question thanks

Question
QUESTION: I have a 94 FXR fault free awesome bike, I have an opportunity to get a 2004 softtail std. My question is, are there any known issues you know of that may alter my decision? The deal is my 94 FXR w 7000 miles (runs like a top) for his bike which has 17000 miles (owner says no known issues) he is throwing in 300$ due to the fact that it will be needing new tires soon. Both bikes are pretty much stock with some cosmetic alteration.
Thanks in advance,
Mike in PA

ANSWER: There is no problems I am aware of on the 2004.l The biggest thing you need to remember is the rub blocks on the cam chains dont last long at all. I have had to replace them at 25,000 up to 50,000. So that would be an upcoming expense.
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION: Thanks Mike that sound like good news. I know shop rates vary drastically from area to area but could you throw a ball park # on replacing the rub blocks? Also, would it be a good time to put different cams in while replacing the blocks?
Thanks in advance,

Answer
You could install gear driven cams, then you dont have to worry about the rub blocks anymore. Plus you can put in better cams. The problem is you will have to remapp the ECM. Installing better cams will make the bike run lean.
I can only tell you what I charge. New gear driven cams would be around 1100.00
