Motorcycle Repair: cbx1000 carby problem, cbx 1000, header pipes

Question
Hi Jan , i put a new after market exhaust on my cbx 1000 ,after it had been sitting in the shed for two and a half years , i fired it up and noticed that the header pipes on 2,3,4,5,and 6 allwent blue and number 1 stayed as new (bright crome) it seems to get warm on start up on choke , but you can touch the header pipe then it only runs on 5 cylinders ,it has compression , fuel in the bowl , lots of spark,i think i have trouble with the slow jet , what do you think , and if i have to take the carbys off , what is the best way to go ,any help appreciated , thanks regards Tony.

Answer
Hi Tony,

I am assuming this is a 1979 or 1980 CBX. Yes this is very indicative of the slow running/idle circuit being clogged.  Since it is #1 you may be able to get this resolved while the carbs stay on the bike.  Remove the Altermator.  Get some wire from an EDM, since you are going to clear a #35 jet which is tiny.  Take off the float bowl, and remove the rubber bung out of the bottom of the carb.  Take the wire and make sure you get this into the lead-in part of the jet, and then rotate it until you feel it go through the jet orifice.  You should be able to get the wire about 1.5 inches into the carb from the bottom of the casting.  I normally cut the end of the wire with wire cutters to give a sharp flat front which will go through the hardened fuel.  You can also remove the jet on the end carbs but this is more involved.  Try this first and let me know how you get on.  Good luck,  Jan
