Motorcycle Repair: battery not charging, alternator brushes, battry

My 1979 CBX battry is not charging when the bike is running. I checked for broken or shorted wires. What should I check next?

Hi Dan,

There could be multiple reasons for not charging, the most common reason is that the alternator brushes are worn.  If you take the alternator off, split the alternator and check the brushes.  Also perform a visual check on the alternator clutch, the surfaces may have some ridges but there should be no discoloration.  I know you checked for broken or shorted wires, but check and double check all of the connectors to the regulator (bolted under the battery tray) and the alternator wires.  There is an article on alternator checks in the last CBXPress magazine.  Good luck and let me know what you find,  Jan
