Motorcycle Repair: Honda CB750A, wet cell battery, ebay auctions

Question
My bike completely cut off on me today while riding it. I turned it off, tried kick start, but no no power... at all no lights from brakes, head light.. nothing. I thought maybe it could be the starter cylinoid or the ignition. OR maybe a wiring. Any guess?

Answer
Zontonnia,

A 12v test light or volt meter will be helpful here.

First, check the battery condition and connection leads. Look for fluid levels to be full, if you are using a wet-cell battery.

Second, check the fuses under the left side cover

If the main fuse has blown out, try another one of the same amperage. Do not use one with higher rating because if the cause of the blown fuse is a short circuit, then the wiring will start melting instead of the fuse. If the second fuse blows again, immediately, then you will have to have someone troubleshoot the wiring for a short circuit, which can be from a grounded wire, shorted out light component or other part that is fed directly by the ignition switch and main fuse. Sometimes fuses will fail from age and vibration. I think there may have been a factory parts bulletin on some of the fuse blocks on bikes of that era, as well.

Third, check the back side of the ignition switch, where the wiring harness connects to it.
http://www.cmsnl.com/products/switch-assy-reproduction_35100422017p/  if the switch base has broken away from the switch, you may be able to repair it with a replacement switch base kit, instead of changing out the whole switch assembly. There are numerous aftermarket replacement ignition switches offered through accy catalogs or on Ebay auctions.

Fourth, If battery isn't being charged, then you could have problems with the stator, field coil, voltage regulator, rectifier and/or wiring connections to those components.
