Motorcycle Repair: GS550E, pilot jet, drain port

Question
Hello, I was wondering if you could help me with a carb problem. My bike is VERY "cold natured"when started,it takes up to 15 minutes before I can give the bike ANY throttle. Once it revs once its ready for all day riding, and as long as its warm its ready whenever you hit the key. When cold the bike will die as soon as you touch the throttle. as it warms I slowly (very) turn the choke back until it will take gas, at which point it runs VERY strong, so I cant imagine its an internal problem, I just rode the bike on a 1300 mile ride flawlesly, with the exception of initial startup every morning. it has fresh plugs, points, gas, and cleaned carbs. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Travis, Before doing any repairs check on something first. The pilot jet may be a little small for the altitude you are at. Check on the stock size it should be a 37.5 stamped on the jet. Since the choke or enrichener jetting is pressed into the carb body it cant be changed. But you may be able to change the pilot to a #40 to help in getting more fuel into the system at the lower RPM also check the fuel float level in the bowl to see if its running a little low.
Try a simple trick, take a a clear plastic line and put onto the drain port on the bottom of the bowl and bend it up along side the carb and then open the drain screw and let the tube fill with fuel it should level out with the level in the bowl and you can see where its running inside the carb without opening the carb up.
