Motorcycle Repair: clutch problem with 1988 sportster, clutch slips, clutch plates

Question
QUESTION: I have adjusted the clutch according to the manual, and no matter what I do, when the clutch is pulled in and I put it in first it wants to pull forward. It's like its never fully disengaging. It has new clutch plates by the way. When on the highway the clutch slips and I can't put it in neutral until the bike is shut off. The only idea anyone has given me is to remove the plates and shuffle them around and pit it back togather. What are your ideas.

ANSWER: Did this start right after installing the new plates? Did you install new steel plates as well as the clutch clutch plates?

QUESTION: Originally I took it in for a check up and they changed the fluid and that's when it started. So they took it back in and changed the plates. Im really not sure if they did just the fiber plates or both fiber and steel plates.

Answer
I would check the plates and make sure they were put in correctly. Make sure they are wet with fluid. They should have been soaked in fluid for about 15 minutes so they are good and wet. Check the metal plates to see if they are worn or warped. When you pu tit all back together loosen the cable alot and then adjust the clutch then the cable
Good luck and happy riding
