Motorcycle Repair: starter always on, honda nighthawk, solenoid switch

Question
Gary, I've an '01 Honda Nighthawk (CB750.) The starter cranks constantly, until the ignition is turned off. Now my headlight is not working. Might both problems be a shorted ignition switch? What's your expert opinion?

Answer
Dennis its possibly the starter solenoid stuck. Tap on it with a screwdriver handle first then turn the key on and try it. If it sticks then try removing the two wire connector off the top of it. The battery cables run into it and out to the starter. If it engages the starter when you turn the key on its the solenoid thats bad. The swtch on the handle bars can go bad and stick causing you to replace the entire switch housing. The lights not on may be the fuse thats in the top of the solenoid switch just because its stressing the electrical system.
