Motorcycle Repair: Starting Problem, loose washers, starter solenoid

Question
QUESTION: This is the 3rd time this has happened!!! I have a '79 FLH80 in great shape, just over 14K original miles. Attepted to start today and the starter would not disengage when I released the starter button. Hit the button a couple times, still turning over. Shut off the ignition switch, still turning over.By the time I got the negative cable undone the insulation on the positive & negative wires at the starter solenoid melted.A new high end starter was put in over the winter along with a starter solenoid. Three weeks ago this happened and I replaced the wires AGAIN along with the sloenoid. The past couple times I went out for a ride upon starting it sounded like a had a bunch of loose washers in my primary. this would last uo to 5 seconds and disipate. I local mechanic that I donot trust said it was the bendix. Don't know of this applys to the starting problem or not??????

ANSWER: Has a new battery been installed since the problem started?

QUESTION: A new "Harley Davidson" battery was also put in over the winter.

Answer
There are several things that can cause your problem. A weak battery will cause it. I would have the battery tested to make sure its good. You said you changed the stater solenoid. Did you change the starter solenoid spring as well? A weak spring will cause your problem.
I would pull the primary cover as well and check the starter drive. It maybe going out. It is located on the end of the jackshaft.
Good luck and happy riding
