Motorcycle Repair: 1986 Suzuki 700 intrude, inline fuse, continuity check

Question
I purchased a 86 suzuki VS700GL Intruder last week. When I test rode it, it ran fine, although I was very gentle with it. Yesterday, I decided to take it out on the highway and open it up a little. I rode about 5 miles and headed back home. About a half mile from home, it started cutting out. I slowed to about 35 mph and pulled over to the shoulder. As i slowed, the bike died. Tried to start it, but had no power anywhere. I started pushing it home, And within about 200 yards, I noticed the neutral light came on( I had left the key on), so tried starting it again. She fired up and I rode it back home, but it was still cutting out badly. Do you have any idea where I should start looking for the problem? I suspect a loose connection somewhere, but don't know where to start.
 Thanks, Tim

Answer
Tim, It may be a bad ground. Pull the terminals off battery and clean the connections then reconnect them also the ground cable to the frame. Remove cable and clean area then reconnect. Also check the positive cable end at the solenoid. There may be a seperate wire on the positive side that powers the switch and ignition system. I have seen these not make a connection even inside the battery end. It may be that this positive wire goes to an inline fuse that could have some corrosion and lost continuity, check to make sure.
