Motorcycle Repair: 1966 CB72 Exhaust, muffler system, degree ends

Question
Bill,  I have a new stock appearing replacement exhaust system on my 250 Hawk.  When I purchased it many years ago it did not have the exhaust collars installed.  I found the correct collars and took the exhaust sytem off to install them.  Problem is the exhaust pipe/muffler system is a one piece system factory welded together so I can't slip the collars in place.  It appears that the thing to do is cut the flared flange off at the point where you can just slide the collar on and tig weld it in place and hopefully cover the weld marks up with the collars.  Since the pipes are new I am hesitant to just start cutting.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Jerry, PUT AWAY THE TORCH............

There are two types of CB/CA exhaust collars/flanges.

The small hole sized flanges go with straight-sided collars for the original 2-piece (separate header/muffler set) exhaust.

When Honda started making the 1-piece mufflers, They had to enlarge the hole in the flange, then counter-bore the back side for a new set of collars which have a small 90 degree bend at the end to fit into the counter-bored section. The flange hole is large enough to fit over the flange end of the header pipe, then the collars slip in to make up the difference.

Here's an ugly example of the flange....

I have new flanges in stock, along with used collars, if you can't find them elsewhere.

More bad photos of the collars with the 90 degree ends, so you can see the difference between what you have and what you need.

I offer restoration guide CDs full of this kind of information for CB72-77s.
