Motorcycle Repair: Clutch Plate Tension, clutch plate, honda dream

Question
I have a 1966 Honda Dream 300, CA77. When tightening down the clutch plate, is there a standard tension that should be achieved? I have looked in the shop manual but the specs seem to be referring to the springs themselves. Also, I don't understand the specs that are given for the springs. Please explain. Thanks.

Answer
Tony,  The clutch bolts only hold the springs in place. They don't do anything to change the tension of the springs on the pressure plate. Bolts are bolts... 6mm take about 4-5 ft. lbs. of torque if you have a wrench. I just tighten them up by hand.

Spring specs are just what they make them to use on that application. Dream springs are lighter in tension than those for CB/CLs, because of the horsepower differences. Springs are made in lengths, wire diameter and quality of spring material, which determine the overall spring function.
