Motorcycle Repair: 1973 Honda, honda cb500, clutch mechanism

Question
So I know that you didn't specify my bike exactly, but I thought I would ask anyway. I have zero knowledge on motorcycle repair. I have a 19973 Honda CB500 K2. Recently the chain broke while I was riding and I took apart the gear box to replace the chain. I replaced the chain and put everything back together but now it seems my clutch handle is not working. The cable is fine, I can see it pull on the spring with the cover off. I am at my wits end trying to figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Travis

Answer
Well from your first statement and from the fact that it was working before you did your repair, we can safely assume you put something back together incorrectly.  Did you purchase a manual before you endeavered on this adventure?  If not, that would be the correct starting place to get this resolved.  I am not sure about the CB500 clutch mechanism, but an exploded diagram as found in the manual will allow you to verify correct assembly and operation.  Also I do not see a reason why you would need to take apart a gear box to replace a chain; normally you can feed the new chain through without taking anything apart, unless the previous chain hit a hole in a case or something?  I would take things apart to the same stage as you did before (no further) and make sure everything goes back (a lot of things only go one way) the way the manual specifies.  Good luck,  Jan
