Motorcycle Repair: protector in clutch reservoir, honda nighthawk, honda vt700

Question
Can't find a thing on how the protector goes back into reservoir.  It is a 1984 Honda vt700.  Tried to clean out brown goo and knocked it out.  Want it to go in correctly and schematics I have looked at, don't show.  Please help.  Thanks Glenn

The little solid tab end helps to deflect brake fluid backing up into the reservoir when the lever is released.

It is position so that the solid tab is hovering over the tiny bleed hole towards the brake line side of the master cylinder.
