Motorcycle Repair: CBX Z (1979), pivot bolt, clutch plates

Question
QUESTION: Hi! After my CBX was  slipping on 4th gear when reaching 5-6000 rpm. Revs upp to 7000 promptly. I had the clutch taken apart and cleaned, measured + new springs - as you recomended in my previuos question. Now the slipping is gone, but when  reveing on 4th it "hooks up" or "stals" for a second. Ive read that there was a warranty issue on -79 that had to to with the 4th gear not beeing properly machined (the track) and therefore replaced. Cbxclub.com/davespage/cm&m_v51-1.html

Anything you experienced or heard of? Seems like a part needs to be replaced?

Regards,
Robert

ANSWER: The part they talk about replacing is the gear change pivot bolt.  This is a very quick job.  Changing any gear or doing any work on the transmission is very time consuming and very expensive.  In early transmissions, there were more issues than in later transmissions.  However if the clutch is working properly and adjusted properly, enjoy the bike!

QUESTION: Hi Jan,

thank you for your prompt answer. Just one follow up on my previous question.

Now the slipping is gone, but when  revving on 4th it "hooks up" or "stalls" for a second. Ive read that there was a warranty issue on -79 that had to to with the 4th gear not beeing properly machined (the track) and therefore replaced. Could it be the ClutchPlate they mean needs replacing (was replaced on warranty back in 79) -  22201-422-000

Answer
If you have checked the clutch plates and found them OK, and furthermore it is OK in 3rd and 5th, I don't think you have a problem with the clutch.  Don't forget all early 1979 bikes have a LOT of clutch chatter which is perfectly normal and does not affect functionality.  Good luck,  Jan
