Motorcycle Repair: 78 suzuki ds 80, suzuki ds 80, clutch cable

Question
QUESTION: Mr. Blake I'm new to the site but hoping you can help me.  I have a 78 suzuki ds 80.  The bike runs good but I'm having trouble getting the clutch to adjust properly so that the tranny will shift (to neutral) while I'm sitting still.  The bike shifts down to first fine when taking off, but when I'm stopping it doesn't want to shift out of first to neutral.  I have to shut the bike off to get to neutral.  I've tried adjusting every way I can think of but can't seem to get it right.  I would appreciate any insight you can send my way.  Also, what is the cable that goes into the top of the case on the left side of the motor.  Thanks again for the help.  Ryan

ANSWER: Ryan,The cable  that goes into the left side if the case is the clutch cable. The cable attatches to a cam like mechanism that turns when the clutch lever is pulled it pushes a rod through the inside of the transmission main shaft disengageing the clutch. Its possible that the cable is stretched and you are not getting the full release of the clutch or the clutch basket is worn and not letting the pressure plate and discs float free. The cable and lever should have only about 2mm slack between the perch and the lever before the clutch actually releases.

QUESTION: Thanks for the help. The clutch cable on mine runs to the lever on the right side of the bike. I did figure out that the cable on the left that I referred to is hooked to the throttle some how. When you twist the throttle there's a cable that runs the cylinder up and down inside the carbeurator and also runs the cable going into the case vertically. I'm assuming that there is a "y" since there's only one cable from the handle bars and must join the 2 lower cables under the tank. Sorry to bother you but I haven't been able to find much online about this bike. Just trying to figure out why there are two cables running off the throttle. Thanks again. Ryan

Answer
Ryan, I apologize the throttle cable does split and one cable runs the slide in the carb the other cable goes to the oil pump to put in the 2 stroke oil for the top end lubrication.
