Motorcycle Repair: 2002 honda xr80r, piston ring, jap bike

Question
hi i have a 2002 honda xr80 i kno it said mainly kawis but its still a jap bike . ran like a top til i brought it off the trail and it just died and wont start for the life of me. I just replaced coil and cdi and getting spark. it will not fire off starting fluid and i dont see any obvious vaccum leaks. also every time i pull the plug out of the cylinder after trying to start it , its soaking wet with gas. i cleaned the carbeurator several times and i dont beleive its a fuel issue as i can smell it in the exhaust after kickin it for a while. i pulled the flywheel and dont see any obvious signs of damage on the stator. i guess it could b getting too much fuel but since i have spark i would think it would at least try to start but it does not. is it possible to have spark but not enough and would replacing the stator fix it or is it something internal like the valves piston ring or somthing else.im stumped any help would be awesome. i jus tried push starting it and it kind of fired for a second and just died out. im fricken clueless

Answer
Hi Casey,
It could be several things causing your issue. You may need a service manual to effectively find the problem. The ignition is a possibility, also the valve clearance, compression and yes excessive fuel will cause it not to start. Try starting it with the throttle wide open, this will allow more air into the engine. A stuck float or trash under the needle valve in the carb could cause the issue.

Terry.
