Motorcycle Repair: 97 Harley Heritage Starter, clutch basket, jackshaft

Question
Mike, I was wondering if you can give me details and any tips on changing the starter on my 97 Heritage. It seems it is starting to give me a problem here and there . It doesn't engage sometimes and I do not want to get stuck somewhere when it goes for good. If it were a car I would say it was the bendix gear was going bad. I guess it is the same problem here. Thanks in advance for your help

Answer
In order to remove the starter, you need to remove the primary cover, clutch basket so you can remove the jackshaft. Once you have that done the starter is held in by two bolts. remove them and the wires and it sill slide out
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
