Motorcycle Repair: clutch, clutch pack, clutch assembly

Question
I've recently bought a 68 dream 305cc,the clutches are sticking. I've changed the oil not the filter, can you refer a parts supplier for this year bike. the cable seems adjusted correctly, when first started it will stall when you shift into first. If you shift into 2nd  it seems to break them free, then it shifts into 1st.just started having trouble shifting up or down ,can't feel any motion in shifter at all, I keep trying up and down along with throttling up and down .all these are cold issues. have only had one hour long ride on bike towards end of ride the hard shift started thats when I changed the oil in hopes of it getting better

Answer
Russ, the best thing to do is to remove the right side footpeg, muffler/header and pull the oil filter cover off, first. Then go ahead and remove the clutch cover, itself. When the clutch is dragging due to sticking plates, it makes finding neutral impossible, as well as selecting other gears, in most cases.

Track down a clutch cover gasket and shift shaft seal, if yours is leaking. For example:

Once the cover is off, you can just remove the 4 clutch spring bolts and remove the clutch plate pack.

Dreams had various types of clutches through the years, so you need to know what you have inside, before you can replace the parts. In most cases, you can just pry the clutch pack apart, plate by plate and then clean each part and re-install. You can actually replace the entire clutch assembly with one from a CB77 or CL77 which has updated parts.

With the clutch cover off, you can also look behind the clutch assembly to check the function of the shift selector parts.

Here's what it all looks like inside...
