Motorcycle Repair: remove/dismount main swith, electrical circuitry, model answer

Question
QUESTION: I dont seem to know how to dismount the main switch from the bike.
It is fixed with two screws but these screws have round semiflat heads which make it difficult how any tool may be used to take them out. I need to dismount this as the several keys that I have are not working properly possibly because of dust and water going inside after so many years.
The bike is a thunderace yzf1000 1996 model.

ANSWER: Hi Carlos,
The bolts are designed to break off at the head when installed. The hex or torque-drive portion of the bolt is discarded after installation. You will have to cut/drill/grind them out to replace the switch. If the keys operate the switch; turn it on, lock steering etc. the problem is likely the electrical circuitry of the switch. It may be possible to dis-assemble the switch and clean/repair the internal mechanism, it is also possible this is not an option.

Terry.

QUESTION: Ok. As I cant dis-assemble the switch and as the problem is only the lock itself and not the electrical part of the switch, do you think I can use petroleum or WD40 or any other solvent to introduce into the lock in order to lubrificate the mecanism so the key may work better. Will it not harm the switch?
Thank you for your assitance
Kind regards
Carlos

Answer
Hi Carlos,
It may be possible to improve operation with a lubricant. I suggest you try a dry graphite lube, it may be a bit more time consuming to get into the mechanism and improve operation but it will last longer and won't be as messy overall.

Terry.
