Motorcycle Repair: Honda vtx 1300 durability, honda vtx 1300, blue book value

Question
I am looking at a Honda VTX 1300 for sale with 36000 miles.  It looks and sounds great and is in great shape overall. It doesn't leak anywhere and the engine does not use oil.  Is this mileage too much?  Should I be afraid to buy it?  What is typical durability for a Honda VTX that has good maintenance?  How many miles are left in this motorcycle?

Answer
Hi Randy,
There are a lot of variables here. Is the engine oil and transmission lube clean, does the antifreeze or radiator have any discoloration or corrosion, are all the hoses in good condition, does the brake fluid color look like honey or lighter, how clean is the air filter and intake behind it, is the differential oil clean, what condition are the brake pads/rotors, do the spark plugs have a normal patina? Whats the engine compression, in the good range or nearing the low limit? Have there been any service bulletins for problems with the bike in some manner? Has it ever been crashed/repaired? What condition are the tires in, needing replaced soon?
These mechanical factors have much to say; what about the cosmetic condition? Is the bike kept in a garage and still looks new or are the elements starting to show their effect on the finish?  What is the blue book value for the machine? If the bike is mechanically in good condition and within specs it should run that many more miles with no issues.
Regards,
Terry.
