Motorcycle Repair: Replace stator/flywheel, honda night hawk, 1982 honda nighthawk

Question
I am not sure on how to replace my stator. I have a 1982 Honda Nighthawk CB750 SC I have the part ready but do not know how to go about taking out the old one and putting in the new.

Answer
Hi Deanna,
Replacing a stator can be difficult if the old unit is heavily corroded. Dis-assembly is a minor task to the point of getting the housing/stator off the crankcase. You should have a manual or at least a good diagram. Check your wiring harness on each unit; plugs and wire color, they should match. Inspect the windings on the replacement unit if it's a used part, look for burnt and/or discolored windings in the coils and melted or damaged wiring/connectors.
I use the following reference often, you may also or have another source of info. It doesn't provide step-by-step instructions, just a diagram. As I am not specifically familiar with your machine there may be some special tools required. Again, the service manual is very useful here.

Often the housing/stator will have enough corrosion to make separating them difficult, a shop with a press and proper support and pressure blocks to use will make the task easier. Ensure you have all the retaining screws/bolts out before using the press. An experienced press operator would be good; when you put an assembly under pressure like this the possibility of catastrophic part failure does exist, (i.e. broken housing and/or shrapnel, both a major bummer!) If possible sand or soda blast the inner portion of the housing to remove corrosion before trying to press apart the unit. After cleaning and blowing out with compressed air a bit of lubrication a around the mating surface will aid in removal. You may get lucky and the unit comes out almost on its on when the bolts are removed, don't hold your breath. Re-assembly should be a simple task from here, stay safe and have fun!

Terry.
