Motorcycle Repair: 86 sportster, red flags, odd noises

I'm looking at buying an 86 sportster 883...it looks great but I don't know much about them. Since its that old what are some red flags I should look for? Thanks

I would ask for any maintance records. That old it might be high milage. Its goign to be tough to know how it was rode. Pull the plugs and check them. If they are black and wet your are burning oil and would probably need a top end job. Ask if you can test ride or have him test ride for a few miles. WHen he gets back check for leaks. Listen for any odd noises. Other than that it would be tough without tearing into the motor.
