Motorcycle Repair: PW50, slow jet, yamaha pw50

Question
We just bought a 1999 Yamaha PW50. When we bought the bike, sleeve that connects the throttle cable to the carburetor was installed "cock-eyed" and it seized up the carb. After soaking it over night in WD-40 we were able to get it to release.   We have completely broken down and cleaned the carb. Replaced spark plug, the throttle cable and choke cable. Drained the old gas and and put new in, and added 2cycle oil to the empty reservoir. The motorcycle will now start and run, but only on full choke and only for a minute or less at a time. If we release the choke it dies. If we give it gas with choke on or off it dies. What could be the cause of this?

Answer
Brandy, The slow jet may still be plugged and not letting gas through the idle circuit. You may have to pull the carb off again and spray carb cleaner through the idle circuit. Make sure the slow jet is clean and also there should be a mixture screw on the outside of the carb make sure its removed when you blow air through the passages. After its clean put back in and set it about 1 1/2 turns out to start with it can be adjusted later. Also believe or not the air filter has to be in place or it wont run. It restricts the air flow down to a direct stream of air through the venturi and drafts the fuel up out of the emulsion tube where the needle hanging down from the slide can meter it. Try this and see it it will work..
