Motorcycle Repair: 1996 Suzuki Katana GSX 600 F, locking gas cap, suzuki katana

Question
I purchased this as a project bike, it's been sitting for 10 years minimum. The gas tank is a mess (varnish and really bad smell). My questions are: what is the best method of cleaning the tank? and, the key wont turn in the locking gas cap... any suggestions on how to free it up?

Answer
Jim, try spaying some WD-40 in the tank lock it may or may not help. As far as cleaning out the tank there are a lot of different methods. Try a product called "Kreem" It has 3 parts tank the tank off and pull the petcock out and use the acid etch first to clean it. Then try the 2nd bottle which stops the etching and clean it out and dry it. Dont use the 3rd bottle its a tank coating and works on leaky tanks. See if this helps any. You may have to clean the fuel valve seperately. This kit is about $35.00.
