Motorcycle Repair: carb XR100, honda xr 100, pilot jet

Question
I have a 2002 Honda XR 100 It starts on the first kick, be only runs with the choke on 3/4. if I try to open fully the bike stalls. I tried adjusting the deal but it didn't help.

Answer
Paul,It sounds as if 1 or both jets may be restricted. Pull the carb off and pull out the jets and the float assembly.Turn the mix screw in untill it seats counting the turns. Then remove it also. Get a can of carb cleaner spray and spray into each passage way and in each jet. Be careful if there is a blocked passage it may spray back in you eyes and it hurts like hell. Take a small wire and run through the main jet and the pilot jet. If you have compressed air available blow through the passages and jets.Put every thing back in place and set your mixture screw where it was before to start with. The float needs to be parallel wi the bottom of the top 1/2 of the carb. Put the hinge end of the float up and let the float hang down. Now slowly tip the top back untill the float contacts the needle and inspect the distance between the float and the mounting surface of the carb. If you put the float on top and invert the top of the carb the weight of the float on the spring loaded needle will give you a false reading. Put back on the bike and turn on the fuel valve, there should be no fuel leaking out of the drain tube on bottom of the bowl.Fire up the bike and it should rev up for you now without having to use the choke.
