Motorcycle Repair: 1968 Honda CL175 K0, stator coils, honda cl175

Question
Hi,
I recently purchased a 1968 Honda CL175 off Craigslist.  I paid little for it but it is in bad shape.  I love the tank, it is the copper color.  I have started to clean items as the engine was completely torn down.  I have worked on 2 strokes but no others.  I noticed that there are cracks in the epoxy insulation on the stator.  Is there some type of epoxy that I could use to cover the exposed copper? The copper shows no gaps. Also, someone put some additional mounting holes on the vertical portion of the frame.  Will this compromise the frame without repair? (about four screws on each side)

Thanks

Answer
Debra, cracks on the stator coils are probably not harmful. If you checked the individual leads with an ohm meter, they should read connections to each of the other leads, but not to ground/stator frame contact. If any coils are shorted to ground, just replace the whole stator with a good used one. Most of them are interchangeable in the CB175 series machines. I would probably just leave them alone. Any epoxy sealants would have to be resistant to oil and high temps of about 200 degrees.

Unless the holes were really large, I think that any small mounting holes in the frame would be inconsequential to frame strength and durability of the machine as a whole.

If it is all torn down, you can haul the frame to a welder and have him weld them closed again. Racers regularly "swiss-cheese" engine and chassis parts for road racing applications with no loss of structural integrity.
