Motorcycle Repair: 68 CL350 Timing chain and cam placement, stator coil, piston movement

Question
Motorcycle Repair: 68 CL350 Timing chain and cam placement, stator coil, piston movement
stator
I'm rebuilding a 68 CL350. I've installed the cam to the chain, lined the pin on the cam upward, but it say to also set the lower at TDC. I've looked and there are no marking on the stator other that the timing marks. It seems to not have a line up? How would I go about finding TDC when there is not a mark out side the stator?Thank you.

Answer
Hi David,

On the CL350 you should have a "LT" mark
on the rotor that lines up on a pointer
that is on the top left stator coil.
This is top dead center for the left
piston.

The camshaft has on the sprocket an "L" mark.
This goes upward as well as the pin
on the camshaft itself.

The timing is set when the left piston
is exactly at the top of the cylinder
and the cam gear "L" mark is at the top.
If you cannot find the marks then
put a straw in the spark plug hole
with some felt pen marks on it
so you can see it move. Get the left
piston when sitting on the bike
at the top of it's stroke exactly
and then put your chain and
cam gear on. Mark the straw when
you find the top of the piston movement.
You can use anything that will not damage
the piston to check it's movement.

Recheck it a few times to make
sure the marks are as close as you can
get them.

The left cylinder valves will be closed when
the piston is at the top. This is the compression
stroke.

You are timing the left piston to be at the top
and the camshaft in the correct position to
keep the valves closed.

Always turn the engine slightly back and then forward
when checking the marks so as to take up
any slack in the camchain.

The rotor may move so make sure you
check it as you go.

You may be able to see where the timing pointer
was on the top left stator coil. Maybe it is broken?

Turn the engine gently until you are sure
that no valves are hitting pistons
on a full engine revolution.

Good luck!
