Motorcycle Repair: 1976 HARLEY DAVIDSON SHOVELHEAD FLH, harley davidson shovelhead, wheel balance

Question
The fork has extreme side to side shaking and is almost uncontrollable on exceleration and when trying to brake. Is it low fork oil or something bent or broken or wheel balance or disc warped and how do I check these things out? I have basic  skills and tools I am not a shop. Have had this bike for 25 yrs or so been doing most repairs my self, from a manual and help from experts like you. The front tire is in great shape no flat spots or cupping, the spokes are tight not broken, appears to spin smooth when off the ground. This shaking happens about 35 to 45 mph. Any help on how to fix this would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks HD Hogg

Answer
I would check the triple tree bearings. With that age of bike they are probably wore out. While you have it apart I would change the fork oil. You should also check the swinging arm bearings. They can cause the problem you are describing as well
Good luck and happy riding
