Motorcycle Repair: starting problems 2001 honda xr650l, 2001 honda xr650l, freeway speeds

Question
rode moto about 30 miles at freeway speeds; got off freeway and less than a mile at 45mph speeds bike had a click or two began to sputter (as if running out of gas) then ultimately cut out and died.  Immediately following pushing it into parking lot a very tiny puff of smoke came out of muffler and when trying to restart nothing would happen.  Let it sit a few minutes and got at first a click with the bike then trying to turn over once and then nothing at all.  Hours later after getting it home; when you try and start it I get a constant clicking from the battery area.  Thought of solenoid but wasn't sure if that going bad while riding would make it die right on the spot.  Things to check? Thoughts and ideas for me?  Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
Hello Tony,

It is quite possible your battery is
either shorted or dead. Also, check
the battery cable connections on both
ends.
When the solenoid or starter relay clicks
it means it does not have enough power
to activate and run the starter.

I would also check the voltage
output to the battery when
you get it started.
It may not be charging enough.

Speed it up and make sure it
charges over 13 DC volts on
the battery terminals.
If not, you may need further
testing done on the alternator
and regulator.

You may have to replace the battery
or charge it fully if possible first.

Most bikes need some battery power
to run properly so that may be why
it quit on you.

Let me know what you find,

Good luck!
