Motorcycle Repair: Rpm fall to zero bike still running, cycle salvage, low gears

Question
HI, I have a 98 yamaha yzf 600r. My problem is that while running low speeds in low gears my rpm gauge will fall to zero as if it is not reading anything but the bike still runs no problem, however when the rpm gauge kicks back in the bike will stutter for a quick second. Again the rpm gauge will drop to zero but the bike will still run. Also, dont know if its related, but the bike will be tempermental when starting. key on, run position push the start button and nothing, again, nothing, once maybe ten times and al of a sudden poof it starts to kick over. again as if its not registering. any information on the matter would help extremely thank you for your time. I HATE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS HELP!

Answer
Well you are not the only one. But the starting problem may be in the handle bar switch not always making contact, this is a common problem with a lot of different bikes. The tach could have a bad connection internally. Check all wires going to tach if all appear ok then go for a salvage unit as the new OEM gauge will set you back and drain your wallet. Try a salvage yard like Steves Cycle Salvage in Tifton Ga. 1-800=922-6253 maybe they can find a gauge for you.
