Motorcycle Repair: 1989 harley davidson 1340 evo, clutch pack, diaphragm spring

Question
QUESTION: When shifting through gears at higher rpm it feels like it not grabbing then it will. We took the clutch pack apart notice the steels got pretty hot the fiber clutches look ok. We also the clutch drum with ring gear was walking also the clutch hub. The bearing felt good. The trans shaft not bent. We know thus can't be right. It should spin straight and smooth. We would appreciate your help.
Thanks

QUESTION: See were having problems shifting at higher rpms. It shifts find at slower speeds. We took the clutch pak apart the steels were burned up but the fiber ones didn't look that bad. It would shudder when shifting. We notice the clutch assy had a wobble to it. We thought that was our problem but I guess that's normal. We put new steels and fiber clutches in it. Did the samething. We got it apart right now. We notice there A B C on the cover for the four bolts go through. We think this a aftermarket clutch basket. The letters has different thickness on them..so that where at. Were also thinking maybe the diaphragm spring might be bad...any suggestions thank you..

Answer
The ABC you are seeing is stock. It sounds like you have the clutch to tight when adjusting it or the spring is bad. Its slipping and that is why the steel plates are burned. I would replace the diaphram spring. Its probably weak with age. When you adjust the clutch loosen the cable so it has alot of slack. Now, turn the adjuster at the clutch, just until it bottoms out and then outward about 1/8 of a turn. Now go to the clutch cable and adjust it so you have about 1/8 inch play in the lever.
Good luck and happy riding
